• Miyagi

Miyagi Prefecture can be found in the central area of Tohoku, bordering the Pacific Ocean on the coast. It contains the largest city in the whole of the Tohoku area, Sendai.

The area is known for its scenic beauty, with high mountain ranges to the west and the northeast coast. There is a central plain that goes right around Sendai, and it spans for miles. The Sanriku Fukko National Park stretches across three different prefectures, including Miyagi.

Animal lovers are going to be in paradise in Miyagi, as Tashirojima Island lies just off of the coast. It is often affectionately called ‘Cat Island’, as the population of cats on the island actually outnumbers the number of humans that live there. You can also find Zao Fox Village in Shiroishi, a place where you can wander among dozens of the small animals.

If you are one of those travellers that enjoy scenic beauty spots, then you will fall in love with Matsushima Bay. It is known to be one of the three most scenic spots in the whole of Japan, according to the actual Japanese government. It consists of a bay full of 260 small islands, each of which is covered with green pine groves.

If you venture into Northern Miyagi Prefecture, then you will find Naruko Onsen. You will be able to find numerous hot springs there, all surrounded by green forests and mountainous landscapes. It has been there for more than 1000 years, and it captures the history of onsen perfectly. You can also find Kokeshi Dolls there to purchase, a type of Japanese traditional craft.

Miyagi Prefecture is also notoriously easy to get to, as all you need to do is take a Shinkansen from Tokyo. You could go for several days or simply go for a day trip away from the busy nature of the city.
