Hiroshima Prefecture is a Prefecture that most people will be somewhat familiar with, regardless of where they come from. It faces Shikoku Prefecture across the Seto Island Sea, and Okayama Prefecture sits nestled to the East of the Prefecture. Towards to North, you can find mountains which lead to Shimane Prefecture.

The Prefecture is home to two separate UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Atomic Dome in Hiroshima City, and the Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima. Only 4% of the land area in the Prefecture is considered to be National Park space, which is relatively low when compared to the other Prefectures in Japan.

No traveller visiting Hiroshima Prefecture should miss out on the opportunity to see the Atomic Bomb Dome, otherwise known as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. It stands as a memorial after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and it has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

A lot of people make their own way out of Hiroshima City to travel to Miyajima, to see Itsukushima Shrine. It stands to be one of the most significant shrines in the whole country. Miyajima itself is known to contain a number of Buddhist holy sites yet, the iconic torii gate of the shrine is what attracts travellers. The torii gate has uniquely been built over water, making it stand out among the other torii gates that can be found in Japan.

While in Miyajima you can also climb Mount Misen, the highest peak on the Island of Miyajima. It stands at around 500-meters above sea level, and it can offer any traveller beautiful panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. You can walk up the mountain on your own, or you can take a short ropeway trip. Hiking up the trail can usually be done in around two hours from the small town.

You can immerse yourself in history and beauty in Hiroshima Prefecture, and the trip to the Island of Miyajima should not be missed.
