Gunma

Gunma Prefecture can be found in the Northwest corner of the Kanto region, and it is rather unique. It is one of only eight different landlocked Prefectures in the whole of Japan, which means that it does not border a body of water.

People who enjoy spending time in nature will love the time that they spend in Gunma Prefecture, as it is surrounded by mountainous landscapes and luxurious onsens. It is one of the most mountainous Prefectures in the whole of Japan, and it borders with Niigata, Fukushima, Tochigi, Nagano, and Saitama. This means that you could easily visit the Prefecture while travelling elsewhere.

Most of the areas in Gunma Prefecture are actually accessible within just an hour from Tokyo, so you could easily visit the Prefecture while staying in the city. The Prefecture itself works hard to preserve the spiritual cultures of both Shinto and Zen Buddhism, so it is relaxing.

If you do plan on visiting Gunma Prefecture, then you should aim to visit the Prefecture for the Ogo Gion Festival in Ogo City. The people involved in the festival carry a handmade lion throughout the streets of the city, to commemorate the elimination of a plague that occurred during the Edo era. It is believed that the God Tenosama and a furious lion got rid of the plague.

The nature lovers among us should aim to visit Oze National Park, which is really close to Lake Ozenuma. The park itself actually spreads across a number of different Prefectures, including Fukushima, Tochigi, Gunma, and Niigata. The park is really busy during the spring and summer, and the fall colours of the autumn make the park look beautiful. We would never advise that you visit during the winter, as the snow does get thick.
